Bike the Golden Gate Bridge

Exercising at home is a necessary evil but it’s even more important when traveling as the temptation to eat and drink more is huge.

But when you can combine exercise with one of the wonders of the world it’s a no brainer.

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was built in 1937 and heralded as one of the top 10 construction achievements of the 20th century.

Many companies rent bikes for the 13 km hike from Fisherman’s Wharf across the bridge to Sausalito. The ride takes about 2-3 hours and is rated moderate to easy.

We caught the tram to Fisherman’s Wharf to pick up our bikes. We had booked them through the concierge at our hotel but this is not necessary.

Negociating the two blocks of traffic to the start of the track was the scariest part of our adventure but once on the trail it’s very safe.

We biked for about an hour past residential areas and wetlands before reaching the bridge. The views back towards the city are incredible.

On the other side of the bridge, a downward stretch leads into the beautiful seaside town of Sausalito. We strolled around enjoying the shops eating a big ice-cream, defeating the purpose of all that exercise, before catching the ferry back to the mainland.

A great family activity for young and old so long as you can ride a bike.
