Unemployed and unable to pay his rent, Brian Chesky unwittingly started Airbnb (Airbed and breakfast) in 2007 by opening his house to three out-of-towners needing a bed for a couple of nights.
Eight years on, this worldwide accommodation service is giving hoteliers a run for their money.
With over 250,000 rooms, in 34,000 cities, in 192 countries, Airbnb is not a hotel chain, but part of a huge new “shared economy,” where individuals share their assets, for a fee.
While Airbnb predominately offer conventional rooms in people’s homes, there are also houses, apartments, castles, teepees, caves, motor homes and much more
